"Old Spanish Trail" - the ensemble
An group of historically-informed performers seeking to re-create the musical experience of the early decades of Houston and environs, from its founding in 1836 until about 1900.
I'm researching mentions of salon concerts, ceremonial music and other performances for specific titles performed here. Our repertoire consists of music that was written and performed in this era, such as music by American composers dating from the American Revolution forward, and the eagerly-awaited, new European repertoire being performed on our shores for the first time. From classical music to the folk tunes from the British Isles that were highly popular, to American ragtime, we bring this special era of history to life.
See our initial finding on YouTube - did you know our neighboring city, Galveston, a major port, suffered a devastating fire in 1885 - just a few years before the hurricane that changed the course of the city? I didn't know about this event until I started searching for Houston's musical history -immediately substantiating the importance of keeping this history alive.
